Visual Arts 02

Visual Arts Curriculum Overview

Our programme follows the IB framework, with a progression that builds foundational skills in the Primary Years Programme (PYP), develops critical inquiry in the Middle Years Programme (MYP), and culminates in the Diploma Programme (DP) with advanced explorations of art.

Primary Years Programme (PYP): Students engage in playful, hands-on exploration of materials and techniques. They are introduced to the elements of art and encouraged to express their ideas through drawing, painting, and working with tactile materials.

Middle Years Programme (MYP): MYP students delve deeper into art as a form of inquiry. They explore global art movements and artworks, experiment with a range of art media and develop their ability to generate original ideas for artmaking. Emphasis is placed on the creative process, from research and ideation to final production, as well as reflecting on their development as an artist.

Diploma Programme (DP): At DP level, students undertake an in-depth study of visual arts, culminating in a curated body of work that reflects their personal vision. They critically engage with art history and theory, analyse artworks from multiple perspectives, and present their creative journey in an exhibition. The DP Visual Arts course challenges students to think like artists and curators, preparing them for higher education and creative careers.

Throughout the continuum of learning, students regularly participate in exhibitions, workshops, and collaborative projects, at local, national and international level. At AIA, we are committed to nurturing confident, compassionate, and creative individuals who understand the transformative power of art in shaping the world. Through the Visual Arts programme, students leave with not only artistic skills but also a deeper appreciation of cultural diversity and the courage to contribute to a global dialogue through their creative expressions.

At Ambassador International Academy, Physical Health Education (PHE) is a cornerstone of our holistic learning approach. It empowers students to develop not only their physical well-being but also their emotional resilience and social intelligence. Guided by the IB Learner Profile and our school values of “Inspire, Inquire, and Innovate”, we ensure students flourish in all areas of our subject, preparing them for lifelong involvement in sports and physical activities.

Physical development in PHE aligns with the IB’s emphasis on active, lifelong learning. Through a dynamic curriculum that combines skill acquisition, fitness, and health education, students learn to appreciate the importance of physical activity in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. They explore the science of movement, nutrition, and body systems while participating in diverse sports that challenge their co-ordination, strength, and endurance. The physical aspect goes beyond fitness, focusing on empowering students to take ownership of their health and make informed choices for their well-being.

PE 02

Emotional Education

Emotional growth in PHE is nurtured by emphasising self-regulation of emotions and reflective practices, core elements of the IB Learner Profile. Students build confidence as they set personal goals and monitor their progress, cultivating resilience when faced with challenges. Physical activities encourage mindfulness, helping students manage stress and maintain emotional balance. Our lessons encourage students to reflect on their successes and setbacks, helping them develop a positive mindset, identity and resilience that extends beyond the sports field.

Social Development

Social development emphasises positive interactions, communication, and respect for others. Team-based sports and cooperative individual activities provide a platform for students to practice leadership, embrace diversity, and resolve conflicts constructively. These experiences foster empathy and global-mindedness, preparing students to navigate relationships in diverse ever-changing environments. By contributing to group success, students also develop a sense of community and shared responsibility.

Values-Driven Education

PHE is driven by our values of “Inspire, Inquire, and Innovate”. Our curriculum is designed to encourage students to think critically, ask meaningful questions, and apply creativity to solve problems in real-world contexts. As a department, we seek to cultivate individuals who are balanced, reflective, and principled. Whether mastering physical skills, building emotional resilience, or fostering positive social interactions, our students will leave each lesson equipped with the tools to lead healthy, purposeful lives. At Ambassador International Academy, PHE is more than just physical activity; it is a transformative journey that empowers students to become confident, compassionate, and forward-thinking.

Explanation of MUN at AIA

Case Study:

On the 25th and 26th of January 2025, AIA hosted the Ambassador Model United Nations (MUN’25), a landmark event uniting about 200 delegates from 20 schools across Dubai. Under the theme “Forging Pathways to Global Unity Through Consensus in Crisis”, this entirely student-led conference provided a platform for young leaders to tackle global challenges, refine negotiation and public speaking skills, and develop leadership qualities while fostering diplomacy and collaboration.

The event was spearheaded by an exceptional Secretariat team of eleven students from Grades 9 to 11, led by the Secretary-General and guided by the MUN Director. The students managed all aspects of the event, including logistics, communication, marketing, financial planning and creative design, showcasing their organisational and leadership skills.

Distinguished guest speakers added gravitas to MUN’25. The opening ceremony featured Mr. Stephen Harrison, MBE, Head of Corporate Communications at Gulf Islamic Investments. With experience in diplomacy, crisis management and international relations, he inspired delegates with insights from his work in the British Diplomatic Service and across the Arabian Gulf and Russia. The closing ceremony welcomed William “Ed” O’Bryan, Space Policy Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi. With a rich background as a Foreign Service Officer and economic policy expert, he shared perspectives on global collaboration and the role of space exploration in international diplomacy.

The opening and closing ceremonies were remarkable displays of creativity and talent, featuring captivating performances, heartfelt speeches and multimedia presentations that left attendees speechless.

MUN’25 hosted five committees, each tackling pressing global issues:

  1. DISEC: The illegal trade of small arms in West Africa and the impact of drug cartels in Latin America.
  2. ECOFIN: Eliminating student loan debt and addressing the impact of unregulated cryptocurrency markets.
  3. UNSC: NATO’s role in Eastern Europe and preventing nuclear proliferation to non-state actors.
  4. UNHRC: Increasing taxes for upper-class citizens in LEDCs and combating modern slavery and human trafficking.
  5. UNCSW: Gender equality versus cultural practices and abolishing the pink tax globally.

These diverse topics encouraged delegates to engage deeply with global challenges, fostering critical thinking, problem-solving and negotiation skills. The conference also emphasised sustainability, reflecting the school’s commitment to environmental responsibility, with both organisers and participants embracing eco-friendly practices.

Valuable Skills Development

Participating in MUN’25 equipped students with invaluable skills that will serve them well as they transition to university and their future careers. The ability to articulate ideas confidently, analyse complex issues and work collaboratively in diverse teams are skills sought after in higher education and the professional world. Moreover, the experience of tackling real-world challenges instils resilience, adaptability and a global perspective, preparing students to become impactful leaders and responsible global citizens.

Held in the state-of-the-art facilities of Ambassador International Academy, MUN’25 was a resounding success. It not only provided a platform for intellectual and personal growth but also celebrated creativity, collaboration and leadership. Guided by the MUN Directors, the student-led event was executed flawlessly, setting a high benchmark for future conferences.

MUN’25 exemplified the power of youth leadership and diplomacy, leaving delegates inspired, equipped with new skills and ready to create meaningful change in the world.

Learning extends far beyond the classroom. To become well-rounded, responsible, and engaged members of society, young people need real-world experiences that challenge and inspire them. The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is a globally recognised programme open to 14 to 24-year-olds, designed to help young people develop essential life skills, resilience, and confidence. The Award is not about competition but about personal growth, encouraging participants to set goals, push their limits, and celebrate their progress.

For over 60 years, this programme has empowered young people worldwide, helping them build independence, leadership, and a commitment to lifelong learning through hands-on experiences beyond school.

DofE Award Structure

The Award consists of three levels (Bronze, Silver and Gold), each requiring participants to complete four key sections:

  1. Volunteering: Engaging in community service
  2. Skill Development: Learning or improving a personal skill
  3. Physical Activity: Committing to a sport or fitness goal
  4. Adventurous Journey: Planning and completing an outdoor challenge

There are three Award levels (Bronze, Silver and Gold).

Why is The Award Valuable for AIA Students?

AIA introduced the Duke of Edinburgh Award in 2024, giving students in Grades 9, 10, and 11 the opportunity to gain valuable skills and experiences outside the classroom.

For students pursuing the IB Diploma Programme, The Award aligns with their CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) programme, allowing them to complete both without additional workload. Similarly, students in the IB MYP can connect their Award experience to Service as Action, making their efforts even more meaningful.

Participating in the DofE Award strengthens university applications by demonstrating initiative, leadership, and a commitment to personal development. Beyond academics, students cultivate the skills needed to manage responsibilities, engage with their communities, and maintain a balanced lifestyle.

Adventurous Journey Section

A key part of The Award is the Adventurous Journey, where students work in teams to plan, prepare for, and complete a challenging expedition or exploration in an unfamiliar setting.

This journey helps participants develop resilience, teamwork, and self-reliance while gaining a deeper appreciation for the outdoors. By embarking on a hiking expedition for multiple days and overnight camping, students strengthen their confidence and leadership skills in a safe, well-supported environment.

The Award is more than just a personal achievement; it’s an opportunity to explore new interests, develop meaningful skills, and contribute to the wider community.

The Student Council is a vital part of the student community at AIA, serving as a platform for students to voice their opinions and contribute to decisions that shape school life. It promotes leadership, teamwork, and organisational skills among its members.

Students are encouraged to apply for a position by submitting an application form detailing why they are suited for the role and are elected to represent the student body by their peers.

Student Leadership- Banner (Medium)

The elected positions include Head and Deputy Boy and Girl, as well as House and Deputy Captains for each of the four houses. Additionally, students elect leaders for various committees, such as Student Voice and Wellbeing, Eco Warriors, Innovators, the Creative Council, and the Editorial Team.

The Student Council meets regularly to discuss initiatives and organise events. Each committee works to keep the school community informed through posters, QR codes, and assemblies. Faculty members provide guidance, helping students develop leadership, organisational, and presentation skills.

Student representatives also hold drop-in sessions where peers can share their thoughts and ideas. These sessions are used to create programmes and activities that address student needs and interests. Examples of initiatives led by the Student Council include wellbeing cafés, recycling programmes, inter-house competitions in sports, arts, and music, as well as student-produced podcasts.

Through its activities, the Student Council fosters a collaborative environment, empowering students to contribute meaningfully to school life while gaining valuable experience in leadership and community engagement.

At AIA, our House System is at the heart of our school community, fostering a vibrant spirit of camaraderie, healthy competition, and personal growth. Our four houses — Ravens, Weavers, Hawks, and Nightingales — each represent unique qualities that inspire students to strive for excellence in all they do. Upon joining AIA, every student and staff member is assigned to a house, forging lifelong connections and a shared identity within their house.

Throughout the year, students participate in a wide range of events designed to showcase their talents and interests. From sporting competitions and music performances to spelling bees, art contests, science fairs, community service initiatives, and other challenges, there is truly something for everyone. These events are seamlessly integrated into our curriculum. They not only highlight individual talents but also emphasise the importance of collaboration and mutual support, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to shine. Our inclusive approach ensures that every student is encouraged to contribute to their House’s success. Whether excelling in academics, sports, or the arts, all efforts and every contribution are valued.

House Points play a pivotal role in encouraging and rewarding exceptional effort, academic achievement, and positive behaviour both inside and outside the classroom. Teachers regularly award house points, which contribute to each House’s collective effort. The competition is keenly contested, culminating in the awarding of the coveted House Cup at the end of the academic year.

The AIA House System is more than a competition; it’s about creating unforgettable memories and fostering a sense of belonging. By working together on shared goals, students build resilience, character, respect and teamwork, encouraging them to strive for their best. It is an integral part of our school experience, bringing everyone together.
